Welcome to Inquiry Mathematics Resources

The purpose of this website is to provide teachers, teacher educators, professional developers, and math coaches with videos and notes to support the development of inquiry mathematics classrooms

In inquiry mathematics classrooms, children figure out mathematical problems and situations in ways that make sense to them, and they explain their methods by showing and explaining their ways  to everyone in the classroom.  The teacher initiates and guides the discussion by asking questions that facilitate classroom discourse between students.

Establishing inquiry mathematics classrooms requires attention to both content and approach. The instructional content necessarily differs from traditional content since the primary goal is in-depth conceptual development rather than just acquisition of skills and procedures.  For this reason, we include resources for both instructional content and approach in the website. We call the sequences and activities inquiry sequences and activities and the instructional approach an inquiry approach. We use this language to emphasize that the content and approach are designed to support the development of inquiry mathematics classrooms, as described above.

So why develop inquiry mathematics classrooms?  Because students are more successful with mathematics when it makes sense to them.
